Important Notice about the "Fun Day" Regatta

UPDATE: The Fun Day Regatta will be held on Saturday, July 30 at 21 Cottage Lane. Registration starts at 12:00 noon.

New "Demonstration" events this year are

 • Adult water balloon toss

• Horseshoes (regulation distance!)

• Tug-of-War

•  Kayak race

Much like the Olympics, there will be no official medals or trophies for the demonstration events. Maybe next year if they prove popular. (Mostly because we had to order the medals some time ago. Embarassed)

Of course, there will be the usual favourites too:

•  Canoe races (Jr. and Sr.)

•  Swim races

•  Various land based games for children (by age group) such as 3-legged race, balloon toss, races and contests. And, of course, the most popular one of all, the sponge toss:

Sponge Toss

(bring your own parent!)

Life jackets may be worn for all water-based events and are encouraged for canoe/kayak races.

Free hot dog and drink for children (under 16). Adults $1 for either.

DON'T FORGET YOUR BATHING SUIT! Towels and lawn chairs are also a good idea. Bring your own kayak / canoe if you are racing.

Note that this event is open to all:  Members, non-Members, Family, Guests, Friends and Relatives. Backlot Residents, People from Palette, Ripple, Jessop or Waseosa. Old or Young, ANYBODY can come! But no pets, please.

Location:

 -- end of update --

We are not able to hold the Fun Day at the Hamilton's and Jones` properties  this year.  June Jone's cottage is now for sale; our activities had used that land as well.  The Hamiltons have been wonderful hosts for many years and we thank them for their generosity.

This year, Fun Day will be back to the Rhoads & Verhey properties, located in Rhoads` Bay at the north end of Waseosa (21 Cottage Lane) where it was held for several years in the mid 1990s. This is the same place we held the February Social this past winter.

We have also ended the search for a new Fun Day co-ordinator:  New resident and member Sandra Heinz (Palette Lake) will be taking over the reins from Dianne Howlett. Dianne has done a wonderful job over the past few years and we thank her for her dedication and efforts.

There remains only one issue: attendance. The number of people participating in the events has dropped from what it traditionally has been (45-55 or so; 47 in 2007) to a new low of 16 in 2010.

The Board had a short meeting after the AGM and endorsed what we were told by the membership:  the 2011 Fun Day will go on as planned (on Saturday 30 July, rain date Sunday 31).  If there is not sufficient interest this year –  as measured by the number of participants – there will be no Fun Day next year.

It was further suggested at the AGM and endorsed by the board, that we make it clear everyone is invited to Fun Day: LWRA members, non-members, family, friends, guests. We are defining ‘community’ broadly and welcome all children associated in any way to our community.

In addition to children’s land and water games, Fun Day offers events for adults too – swimming and canoe races have been the traditional staples. We hope to expand that a bit and have more events for those who are still children at heart. Suggestions include games like horseshoes, etc. or even a sailboat race. All suggestions will be happily and enthusiastically received, especially if the suggestions include loans of any equipment required for implementing the suggestions.

We hope that the low attendance at Fun Day in recent years was an anomaly and we hope that you, your children, grandchildren, friends of your children/grandchildren, children of visitors, etc., will be able to come to the Verhey’s (directions to follow) on Saturday 30 July. Please let us know if you think you will be attending and how many children will be attending with you.
